BMW's M models are the quickest, fastest, and sharpest vheicles the brand offers, and have been for decades. That history continues with this latest in the lineup, the X4 M, BMW's Motorsport version of the compact crossover coupe.
What's New
A new model for 2020, the BMW X4 M saw no changes for 2021.
Available Trims
BMW keeps the lineup simple. You can order your X4 as the X4 M or X4 M Competition. The former offers 473 hp from the turbocharged 3.0L inline-six and the latter 503, with both making 443 lb-ft of torque. Competition means a sharper, even more handling-focused ride.
Standard Features
The X4 M’s standard performance and exterior features include dynamic dampers, 20-inch wheels, and adaptive LED headlights.
Leather is standard, as is a heated steering wheel, hands-free power tailgate, an integrated garage door remote, proximity keyless entry, panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors, heated and power-adjustable sport front seats with driver memory, artificial leather dash trim, ambient lighting, and automatic climate control. Tech features include navigation, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, and a WiFi hotspot.
Standard safety features for the X4 M include automatic high beams, BMW’s driving assistant, rear cross traffic alert, city-speed collision detection with automatic braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear collision prevention, and speed limit display.
Competition adds sport exhaust as standard, along with extended Merino leather and ventilated front seats.
Key Options
Options include an advanced driver assistance pack that adds adaptive cruise control and all-speed forward collision avoidance. A premium package adds a Harman/Kardon stereo, manual rear side sun shades, a display key, head-up driver display, parking assistant with surround view, heated rear seats, and wireless smartphone charging.
An M enhanced group with extended Merino leather in a selection of colours is offered on X4 M, plus a sport exhaust, sport seats, and various wheel options.
Fuel economy
BMW estimates 16.6 L/100 km city, 12.1 highway for both models.
Competition
BMW faces strong competition in the ultrafast compact luxury crossover segment. Mercedes offers an equally quick but V8-powered Mercedes-AMG GLC while Audi has the SQ5. Alfa Romeo's Stelvio Quadrifoglio, Porsche's Macan, and the Range Rover Evoque all offer appealing levels of style, luxury, and performance.
